I've taken a couple of coupon classes (yes they exist!). Here's a few things I've learned:

First thing you need to know is that everything in the grocery store will go on sale in 12 week cycles. It might not be the same brand, but it will go on sale. So you need to stock up your family for 12 weeks. To do that you need one coupon for every member of your family.

It might sound crazy, but get one Sunday paper for each member of your family. For the coupons. So each member of your family has a coupon for whatever you're buying. The Sunday paper has better coupons than the ones you find online.

Only use the coupon when the item is on sale. Never use it when the item is not unless you really need it. It's best to combine store sales with coupons since that gives you the best deals. For example, I had a buy one get one free coupon for Revlon products. I waited until the store had a buy one get one free sale on makeup and THE MAKEUP WAS FREE. The sale and the coupon canceled each other out.

In Nevada and in Utah they have a website that tells you when to use the coupons. Unfortunately it's not available in MI yet so it will take you a little bit more time, but the savings are worth it. I've just started doing those few things and have been saving about 35% off of my grocery bill. My friend that taught me saves from 65% to 77% off of her grocery bill. If you want me to explain more, just ask!

The Sunday paper is the best place for coupons. The Detroit Free Press is good, and so is the Press and Argus. Kroger will also double coupons up to a $1 with a plus card. Plus, diapers.com will give you $10 off your first order and ship free 2nd day air if you spend $49 or more. Plus theres no tax and you get a free subscription to Parenting magazine. I get Brady's diapers there and have been stocking up for the new baby so I can get free shipping. I had a little folder for coupons to keep them organized by type of item. It helped, then I went through before I went to the store and pulled out the ones I knew I would use that day and put them aside. That way your not shuffling through a mess in the middle of a store with an impatient toddler. Also, watch sale fliers and match your coupons to the sale items to save more. Hope that helped:)
